How did you come up with the name, Gracie Street?
The expansion of the firm to include a retail boutique, alongside its already established design practice, called for a name that honored both heritage and craftsmanship. Inspired by Dougie’s historic hometown of Petersburg, Virginia, she discovered a story that beautifully mirrored the firm’s brand philosophy – one rooted in quality, versatility and timeless design.
In early American history, Petersburg was a thriving hub of artisans and merchants. From Windsor chairs and fine cabinetry to silver, pottery, candles and textiles, the town produced objects that blended function with beauty. The city’s silversmiths gained a reputation that endured generations, as its merchants were known for offering nearly anything a discerning client could desire. This spirit of thoughtful commerce and refined craftsmanship traveled north with Petersburg entrepreneurs such as Archibald Gracie, whose influence lives on in New York City’s Gracie Mansion and in Petersburg itself, where his name still marks one of its streets.
This same tradition lives on with Gracie Street’s approach – curating interiors and collections that balance history with modern living, craftsmanship with comfort and regional roots with East Coast sophistication. It is not simply a title, but a reflection of a legacy: celebrating enduring design, meaningful detail and a commitment to beautifully lived spaces.
